What About BAPTISM? M is for Membership.

Why is Scriptural baptism the entry point for membership in the local church?

We find a Biblical example in Acts chapter two, of how the local church is to function. Pentecost was a great day for the church that Christ had established before His crucifixion and ascension! The Holy Ghost was manifest in a visible way, and there were many who responded to the preaching of the Apostles. Acts 2:41 shows us what happened with those who received the Lord that day: “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.”

Do you see the pattern?

  • First, they were saved (“…they that gladly received his word…”)
  • Then, they were baptized (“…were baptized…”)
  • Finally, they were added to the membership of the local church (“…were added unto them about three thousand souls.”)

Salvation and baptism come first, and then church membership follows. It should happen in quick succession. You should be saved, then baptized, and immediately added to the local church. That way, the third step of The Great Commission can be started – discipleship. You see, the church is made up of disciples: those who wish to follow Christ’s example and be like Him.

As a saved and baptized disciple of Christ who is a member of the local church into which God has specifically fitted you, there are many great things ahead. Church membership gives you a pastor to guide you, and fellow believers to encourage you. It gives you a place to grow and to learn to serve. It gives you an opportunity to take part in the greatest endeavor in the world: The Great Commission of the Local Church.

My friend, if you have received Christ as your Saviour, and have not yet been Scripturally baptized, make today the day that you decide to be obedient the Lord in this matter. Do not hinder your spiritual growth and lose opportunities to serve God by quenching the Holy Spirit through disobedience. You have everything to gain, and nothing to lose when you submit to God’s plan for your life!
